Traffic on Heighington Road Canwick and on Canwick Hill

Reported anonymously at 11:42, Sat 1 August 2020

I live on Heighington Road in Canwick and have a pretty good view of the problems that many locals are reporting on Next-door.com. There have been numerous accidents and near-misses. There are several issues here and the council must do something about it before someone gets seriously hurt: 1. Traffic is now pretty much back to the way it was when there were temporary traffic lights. Without the lights getting on to Canwick Hill is really dangerous, especially when the drivers trying to get out are frustrated after waiting for so long to get out. Also, drivers who know Canwick village are turning off Heighington Road and trying to avoid the tailbacks by going through the village and joining the hill lower down. The narrow roads through the village are not fit for this much traffic. Solution: reinstate the lights 2. 40mph is faster than you think! Cars coming up the hill at 40mph that come into sight just as you pull out onto the hill can nearly give you a heart attack. Yes, I've read that drivers are complaining that cars are pulling out of Heighington Road in front of them, but they should bear in mind that cars can't be seen until the last minute. Solution: reduce the speed limit to 30 mph on Canwick Hill. 3. Drivers who successfully make it up the hill and want to turn right towards Bracebridge Heath are struggling with the redesigned junction. We walk past the junction every day and we are amazed by how many cars turn right before the bollard, driving on the wrong side of the road for 30 yds until they realise their mistake. On occasions we witness 3 out of 4 cars going the wrong way. I don't want to be too down on the drivers because I have made the same mistake myself - and I live within view of it! It's a badly designed junction and the council need to consider how they can help drivers avoid driving on the wrong side of the road. That's another accident waiting to happen. Solution: council need to look at improving the design or signage at the junction.
