Constant speeding on Oak House Lane

Reported anonymously at 20:02, Mon 10 July 2017

Sent to Boston Borough Council and Lincolnshire County Council 3 minutes later. FixMyStreet ref: 1069416.

The limit is 30 mph, almost nobody observes it in either direction outside our property at the northern end of the lane on a large bend before the road turns from and into Hobhole Bank. Many are driving at 45 to 50 mph, some even higher. We chose to purchase this property some months ago, largely because it was on a quiet lane with a 30 mph limit and now feel it was a mistake since our lifestyle and expectations are so seriously marred by noisy speeding vehicles. There are only two circular signs at each end of the 30 zone - all of which are largely ignored. There is just one very faded CHECK YOUR SPEED! 30 sign near our property which is blatantly disregarded. We feel that many more signs are needed and these drivers should be made aware that they are constantly breaking the law. It is most distressing to be constantly reminded every minute or so that so many people seem to have no consideration for others. There are two distinct 'rush hour' periods on weekdays - from 7 am to 10 am and from 4 pm to 7 pm but speeding drivers are an intermittent problem all day long, as well as at weekends - particularly Saturdays. Sundays are rather less frantic generally but STILL people of all ages exceed the speed limit to an astonishing extent. Obviously these practises are also potentially highly dangerous - we have had some worrying situations with drivers racing by when we are either leaving or entering our drive. It is incredible that they are prevented from speeding by an infringement camera on an extremely busy main road nearby (the A52), and are kept to a 40 mph limit, yet it seems to be acceptable to drive at up to double the legal limit on what should be a quiet local lane. They are possibly using this road as part of a cut-through to avoid the roundabout at Boston and, of course, the speed cameras. PLEASE do something about this problem and install more signs as well as monitoring and enforcing penalties for bad driving habits as is now happening in many of the more aware and progressive counties. We have paid Council Tax to Boston Borough (at 4 Haven Bank, and now Fox Holme, Oak House Lane) for close to 14 years - always promptly - and believe we have the right to expect control and enforcement of local speed limits.

  • Mandy Hurford of Highways & Planning advised this is not a matter for Lincolnshire County Council.

  • I have emailed Lincolnshire County councillors and Boston Borough councillors responsible for Freiston without success and with little interest or support. I first contacted them more than two and a half months ago. Everyone seems to claim it is neither their responsibility nor within their power to do anything about. A request for more signs to be erected has produced no result. We are considering selling up and moving since nobody appears to care, or even to be remotely concerned about speeding in this locality, this area or this county.

  • Nothing has been done, even though I have tried for several months to get my local Councillor interested in requesting more signs to remind drivers of the 30 mph limit. Other approaches to various authorities have also met with no success, enthusiasm or interest.

  • Nothing done. Some drivers observe the speed limit, bless them, but most just roar by. The latest idea by my local councillor, after trying for months to get him to assist, is to have the 'Check Your Speed! 30' sign taken away. How he imagines this will help is beyond comprehension.
