Heavy Vehicles on road causing building to audibly and physically shake

Reported in the Road surface issue category anonymously at 21:20, Mon 27 April 2020

Sent to Lincolnshire County Council 7 minutes later. Council ref: 370838.

We moved into this property 3 years ago. The property is circa 1500, well before the current road surfaces were built.

The current road has been built in such a way that when heavy loads travel across this road, an entire section of the house vibrates and shakes. It rattles the windows, doors and is of such a vibration that is not just noise but causing amplified waves shaking the house. We can physically feel the upstairs floors shaking.

We suspect the vibrations are carrying under the road, travelling across to the house and vibrating upwards into the house.

There are cracks in the house and it is our belief they are being impacted by this event happening on a regular basis.

We request that somebody comes out (post lock-down period) and carries out a proper survey on the effect heavy vehicles are doing to the property.

It is my understanding that their impact is detrimentally impacting the stability of the house over the longer term and therefore should have appropriate measures put in place to stop the vibration into the house and land we own, or alternative routing of heavy vehicles are put into place.

These is not light vibrations, it is audibly clear and the shaking is physically felt across the majority of the house. As a result, this is a serious issue for us.

  • We are sorry but we are not taking immediate action with this report. We inspected this location on 29 April 2020 and it was assessed in accordance with our Highways Infrastructure Asset Management Plan and there were no defects which require urgent action. We will continue to monitor this location as part of our routine inspection schedule. Vibrations affecting the property is a private matter for which you will need to contact your house insurers to request that they carry out a survey to identify any issues caused by possible vibration. Thank you for reporting this matter.

  • Please outline what was covered during your investigation. It should be noted the investigation was taken place at the height of the lockdown when large vehicles were at the lowest frequency.

Please contact me directly to provide detail as to exactly what was assessed, how this matches with guidelines.

Vibrations affecting the property is not a private matter when it is as result of allowing vehicles to pass across a highways manufactured road. I guarantee this house did not vibrate when it was built and as a result of the materials used to build the roads then. The combination of the materials used now and the allowance of the size of vehicles is causing the vibrations - and this is precisely a council cause, not a private matter.
