Investigating
Blocked and overflowing drain
Reported via desktop in the Flooding category anonymously at 11:54, Thu 24 December 2020
Sent to Lincolnshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 382530.
Drain under Water Lane blocked and overflowing due to lack of maintenance on drain and ditch on the west side of Castle Bytham Road. The ditch has become overgrown and completely blocked (no maintenance done in the 17 years that we have lived in Swayfield). Debris from ditch is carried through the culvert into the drain which blocks and overflows. At 10pm on 23rd December the ditch was overflowing across Castle Bytham Road outside "Dovestone", the drain cover on the corner had a 20cm high fountain of water (now a lot less) and Water Lane was completely covered with fast flowing water to a depth of 6 to 8cm (ankle depth). No property owner in Water Lane could access their property on foot without wellington boots. This has been a continual problem for years, approximately 15 months ago I reported the same and it took 6 months of virtually continuous flooding before the drain was jetted clear, this is only a temporary solution until the ditch is properly maintained..

The ditch will be the responsibility of the adjacent landowner. If enforcement action is required to encourage them to maintain then the local Internal Drainage Board may be able to assist with this. Welland and Deepings Internal Drainage Board can be contacted at https://www.wellandidb.org.uk/ contact/ Thank you for reporting this matter.
