Junction of Minnett's Hill and Church street

Reported via desktop in the Visibility at junction or bend category anonymously at 13:41, Monday 25 September 2023

Sent to Lincolnshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 471838.

There is a footpath along church street, only on one side, which leads from Barkston & Syston school to Minnett’s Hill. When school children and pedestrians come to the junction they have to cross diagonally, passing Minnett’s Hill, to reach the footpath on the opposite side of the road leading down Honington Road.

There is a tall hedge at the junction of Minnett’s Hill which makes it a blind corner for anyone trying to cross the road. You cannot see the traffic coming down the hill, and there have been some near misses over the years.

The hedge has been trimmed but not removed or cut down to ground level to enable a view of oncoming traffic.

  • We are sorry but we are not taking immediate action with this report because whilst we can fully appreciate your concerns with the hedge, we are unable to justify the removal of approximately 50m of hedge for the small amount of benefit that would be produced from this action. This junction is far from ideal, but removing the hedge would not greatly improve the safety at this location. Thank you for reporting this matter.

  • Council ref: 471838.

You do not need to remove the whole hedge but only up to the road sign (Which is obscured by the hedge) that would give enough of a view up the hill to help people crossing. Or if you want to keep the hedge at least reduce the height to a couple of feet high up to the road sign. During the day there are a lot of children and elderly people who cross the road at this point and living next to the junction we have seen a lot of near misses. It's a blind corner and you could make it a lot more safe! I have been in contact with the local school and they are concerned about the hedge as well.

  • The photograph is the pedestrian view of the junction from the footpath. We get cars speed round the corner from Minnett's hill onto Church street and you have to be ready to stop suddenly. It's hard for an adult to cross even more for children and wheelchair users.
