PORTERS LODGE RAILWAY BRIDGE Ref 91/59/64

Reported via desktop in the Road Markings category anonymously at 09:30, Wed 22 November 2023

Sent to Lincolnshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 479827.

I am concerned about the lack of signage advice to drivers when approaching and negotiating through the bridge known as Ref 91/59/64 Porters Lodge Railway Bridge. Built before 1894. The road known as Morkery lane is little more than a minor country road. The road is used by a mix of cyclists, domestic vehicles, commercial and agricultural transport and machinery. Exacerbated by the fact that Castle Bytham village is expanding by 100 new homes. There is, only the meagre signs shown in the photos and no speed advice to slow to 15/20 mph for the S bend chicane. Or maximum speed advice, given that drivers can be confronted with large vehicles in the centre of the road immediately upon entering the tunnel through the blind bend. Inside the tunnel there is no view of oncoming traffic. The existing signs are around 200m metres from the hidden entrance from each direction. I have often seen incautious driving, too fast over the white mid line when exiting the bridge tunnel, A high profile advisory speed limit reminder is required,

  • In addition to my original report. I would add that part of the structure is very close to the road edge. In the photo it is much less than a half metre. This needs to be marked by white paint or reflective plate. to complete the signing upgrade. The bridge approach photo' is from the east Castle Bytham.
