Investigating
Church Lane, outside no 27 & 29
Reported via desktop in the Standing water covering more than half the road category by Mark Poucher at 07:59, Mon 15 September 2025
Sent to Lincolnshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2855663.
Number of blocked drains, either side of the road, road sloping wrong way, badly eroded pathway! Drains blocked, let through probably 1 egg cup of water an hour. Road recently resurfaced, now water doesn't actually flow to the drain as it did do, road slopes wrong way!!!! Does get there eventually when the road is well flooded. Water flows on to path which itself is in very state of repair. Safety risk: 1 - cars try to avoid flood, means cars going towards West Street on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend, potential for head on collision; 2 - kids come and 'play' in the water, I have had to warn a number of them of the dangers, potential for fatal collision; 3 - approaching winter - potential for freezing standing water on the highway as well as the path - potential fall hazard for pedestrians and skid hazard for cars! This path is used by children to get to / from school, older people, people with push chairs, walking frames etc. Pictures taken on the 4th & 15th September.

Road does flood all the way across the road and in to Quakers Close, which causes huge problems to the residents! When the water evaporates out of the drain, you can see visible debris in the sump. Although this will help lower the water, it in itself will not eradicate the problem due to the road being laid incorrectly.

Picture showing water 'trapped' as no gradient on road to get to drain (which is blocked). Only way water gets 'moved' is via vehicle tyres transferring water elsewhere or evaporation.

Great news, we’ve had a look at the issue and we have now passed to our Highways Officers for the team to assess what can be done to resolve the matter. We’ll let you know when the assessment has taken place.

Please please please come down and see for yourselves - school run a particular source of entertainment! Look at the 'splash' the cars are creating, clearly not seeing the depth of the water and hazard it is producing. Limited vision through that spray of water I would guess!

We're sending you this message to let you know that we've assessed the drainage condition and we have identified this location for a larger scale improvement scheme. At this stage we are unable to give specific dates for this or definitely commit to the scheme because we prioritise these schemes based on condition compared with the rest of the County drainage network and the resources available to us each year. We will continue to monitor this location as part of our routine inspections of the highway in the meantime. Thank you for reporting this matter.

Clearly missing the point here! Please can the investigating officer come round to No 29 and discuss properly? Since the re-surfacing of the road, even when the drain finally does move a bit of water away - there is still a big volume left on the road outside No 27 & 29. This is due to the road being laid incorrectly and the drain being effectively higher than the road it is supposed to service! Whilst I thank you for looking at the bigger picture, the road has flooded for over 30 years that I can think off, so what is the plan and when? The water left on the road is a major hazard being so close to a blind bend and people 'going around' it on the wrong side of the road. Those who either don't see it and chose to go through it are hit by a wall of water obscuring their vision going in to the corner. Please contact me direct to meet someone and carry out an in-depth investigation, thank you.

Further to my update yesterday, please can you tell me if the drains are going to be cleaned out. Clearly visible debris in the drains, the ones opposite 27 & 29 are best part tarmacked over now. Although the road is a lot better, no pot holes, the leveling is questionable. On one side of the lane, tarmac almost level with the top of the kerbs, and my side and much bigger step, certainly noticeable when driving up the 'dropped' kerb to my property. The only resolution would be to resurface the section of tarmac in front of 27, 29 & 31 to get the gradient to run to the drain, which it used to before resurfacing. Highways has generated this current issue - please can it be rectified???

23rd November: ATTENTION!!!! Yet again, rain and a flood. This is a direct result of recent resurfacing works!!!! Still blocked drains and even more frustrating - wrongly laid tarmac resulting in the road sloping away from the very poorly maintained drain. Please send a representative from the highways to see me, I would be very interested to hear / see what their 'investigation' and 'assessment' of this situation has concluded. This is now affecting next door who is trying to sell their property, very difficult when you approach from either direction to see 'flood' signs on the pathways! As I have stated, issue as a direct result of resurfacing works, get them back, resurface correctly and clear the drains out please, Not rocket science, plain logic and planning required.

28/11/25. TWO distinct issues I have raised. You seem to have addressed the drainage??? However, you are totally missing the point about the new road surface that has been laid incorrectly!!!! Road slopes AWAY from the drain! Is this being addressed separately as this is not the 'drain' at fault, but how the water gets to the drain.

Just to let you know this issue has turned out to be more complicated than we first thought. We need to take this on for more investigation. We will let you know the situation as soon as we can. Thanks for bearing with us.

15/12/25 Update: Not sure to laugh or cry? You state this is more complicated? Let me help with the investigation. Prior to July 22nd 2025 - road sloped towards the drain, no issues of water 'puddling' in front of 27 / 29 due to being stranded. And, dropped kerb was significantly smaller |(distance between kerb top and road surface) to allow 'smooth' transition in to driveways. July 22nd - road planed and subsequently re-laid. Issue created: tarmac re-laid incorrectly - no slope towards the drain, larger distance between kerb top and road surface. Result, standing water left outside of 27 / 29 when drain removes rest of water (eventually) from road and a rather large step up on to driveways. End of investigation! Solution - re-lay road correctly i.e. slope towards the drain, this in turn will correct kerb height issue. Hope that helps. I would really value a visit from your investigation team. I have been a lead investigator for many years in a leading utility, so I am willing to share my knowledge. Many Thanks.

23.12.2025: Drain totally and utterly blocked, please zoom in on photo!!! This needs urgent attention, as it clearly has not been cleaned out following road works in July. How on earth there can be any expectation of water going down here is laughable.

Road flooded all the way across again and stretching from 27-31 Church Lane now. This is after only a relatively small amount of rain this time so the issue is clearly getting worse. Cars are coming round the corner from West Street not knowing this is there, either hitting the water at speed, or slamming on their brakes and reversing back round / doing three point turns on a blind corner to avoid it. Traffic from the High Street end is in the middle of the carriage way to avoid the deepest parts of the water. It’s only a matter of time before there is an accident. Not to mention how incredibly difficult this is for the residents who live at these properties to enter / leave their drive ways. Please please rectify this asap.

Road flooded for over 3 months solid now!!!!! Reported back in September!!!! To top it all - road sweeper just come down the road, stopped at flood, drove down the middle of road and carried on sweeping after the flood. Is this a joke? The only place thick with sludge is in front of my house because of the flooded road!!!

March 13th 2026: After enjoying 3 days (out of the last 3 months) with a 'dry' road outside my house - flooded yet again. I have been asking for the main drain (big metal grid over it - outside number 27) to be cleared for 6 months now. It is blocked to the top, is it too much effort to send someone out to clear it or do I need to pay myself and get someone who is capable and competent to do it? Many thanks.
