Cyclists on footpaths
Reported via desktop in the Sign (unlit) category anonymously at 15:37, Tue 11 November 2025
Sent to Lincolnshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2861095.
I am writing to call your attention to two footpaths in Stamford which are used by cyclists frequently, illegally and dangerously. The footpaths in question are those across The Meadows and The Recreation Ground.
My wife and I have been narrowly missed by cyclists on these paths on several occasions. Most often these cyclists have been middle-aged men, some of them heavy, cycling at speed. They do not seem to realise that pedestrians using these paths do not expect fast moving traffic, especially from behind. They also do not appreciate that pedestrians can unexpectedly take a side step or otherwise veer slightly off course.
We are in our mid-70s, and being knocked down and breaking a limb can mean the difference between our last years being fit and healthy, or being crippled.
The south end of The Meadows footpath has a "no cycling" sign but it is obscured by a tree. The sign at the north end is very dirty and barely legible. Both signs are too high to be easily seen.
The sign at the south end of The Recreation Ground is similarly illegible and that at the north end is missing.
Clear "no cycling" signs, at an appropriate height, would deter cyclists and increase the chances of a successful prosecution, should that become necessary.
