A1133 Newark Road by chevrons down to Marsh Lane

Reported via mobile in the Trip hazard/uneven surface category anonymously at 16:01, Thu 18 December 2025

Sent to Lincolnshire County Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2866236.

Possibly the drain has fallen in. The road and the pavement both flood every time it rains. Our 12 year old daughter and her 2 friends of a similar age have to walk (& balance) on the pavement edge to and from the bus stop (at the moment in the dark both mornings and afternoons) to get to school. We have also had complaints from our 82 year old neighbour who has to balance on the kerbside whilst walking his 3 dogs. As it is a blind bend If a vehicle is approaching they cannot see them on the pavement/road edge therefore they are regularly splashed, which they then have to sit at school all day with wet clothes. The girls are also extremely scared as the traffic tends to travel fast and are invariably lager vehicles such as trucks and coaches. We have reported this several times over the past few years, the drains get cleaned, but it hasn’t ever stopped the problem. It’s just getting worse.

  • I understand that the pavement here is also affected. The flooding has resulted in silt/mud being deposited on the pavement. The surface is now dangerously slippery. A resident had fallen because of this

  • Here is the email from the resident who was injured on 14/2/26 by slipping on the pavement.

Dear Sir, I’m reporting my fall at 6.35pm on the 14/02/2026. I was walking my dogs on the footpath directly opposite Marsh Lane on the right hand side of Newark Road going in the direction of Gainsborough. We had experienced significant rainfall and the water was several inches deep on the road up to the curbside. For this reason l was walking on the pavement keeping as far as possible from the curb as often if traffic is heading towards each other vehicles drive through the water splashing pedestrians. The lighting was very poor and l was unaware how muddy and slippery the pavement was. My right foot slipped forward and all of my weight was directed onto my left leg which due to me still waiting for knee replacement could not bear my weight. I fell heavily onto my left side with my upper arm and shoulder striking near to the curb side. When l looked down as l tried to rise l was looking straight down into the pooled water. As I’m almost 84 and have a very weak knee l was unable to rise without crawling towards the inner roadside railings. I was in considerable pain and went straight into my neighbours house beside where l had fallen as l must have been in shock as l was shaking. I stayed with him for maybe 10 minutes before heading off home with my dogs. That night was not good as l was in considerable pain and barely slept. The following morning my neighbour who had assisted me the previous night came round to check out how l was, while he was there he said that the problem on that corner with water backing up was a long term issue and seemingly had previously been reported to the council. He had taken photographs of the area where l fell before coming to see me which clearly showed where l had slipped and fell plus the build up of sludge on the pavement. I rested most of the day feeling sorry for myself taking prescription Cocodamol and Phorpain cream every 4 hours. That night was similar to the previous one as every time l tried to sleep and put any weight on my left side the pain was severe. Monday l contacted my GP on the Triage system and waited until lunchtime with no response. I then drove to Gainsborough Hospital and was examined there and sent to X-ray department. I was there for almost 6 hours leaving at 6.20pm with no results. Drove back on Tuesday morning and was told that fortunately there was no fracture but that l had suffered muscular trauma after being assessed by the physio nurse. I requested the report but was told that would be sent directly to my GP. I phoned this afternoon but was told that it had only just arrived and they could not forward it to me until a doctor had read and signed it and to call in on Monday to collect it. I am still suffering significant pain but it is gradually improving but l am anything but happy having been told by another neighbour that this had been reported on numerous occasions and was an accident waiting to happen. Yours Sincerely Gordon Fraser.

  • Just as an update. A team has been and spent some time this morning (04/03/2026) clearing and supposedly cleaning the area. The photos included have been taken when I returned home at 4.30pm this afternoon. The pavement is still covered in sludge and there is still sludge around the road gutters.
