The drain in front of my property stonewell house, is blocked and filling up which is in turn flooding into my garden. It is a ditch which drains the road only, it doesn't drain my property. It flows down past my house and the neighbors and into a drain under the road. It has been an issue the last couple of years but especially this year and I've realised the drain bed is so built up in silt it's higher than my garden and is flooding my front garden, causing us issues. It needs digging out asap to clear it properly so it works properly.

We are sorry we are not taking action on this enquiry. The majority of roadside dykes and those on property boundaries are privately maintained under riparian law. In this case it is likely that the frontager or property owner is responsible for the maintenance of the dyke adjacent to their boundary. It is recommended that the customer contact the local Internal Drainage Board for the area in order to ascertain ownership and responsibilities in regard to the dyke in question. I am the property owner and as far as I'm aware I am not responsible for this drain under Riparian law, as it is not a watercourse, it is a drain for the road (highway as such)! What Internal Drainage Board would I be under, and how do I contact them?
