  • Formal Risk Assessment – Embankment

Location: Embankment (approx. 6 metres in length)

Description of Hazard: The embankment has an approximate gradient of 20 degrees. Its slope and surface condition make it difficult to traverse, particularly during descent. The gradient increases the likelihood of slips, trips, and falls, especially in wet or icy conditions.

Persons at Risk: • Members of the public • Elderly individuals • Children • Individuals with limited mobility • Maintenance or inspection personnel

Hazard Identification: • Loss of footing while descending • Slips due to loose surface material or wet conditions • Falls resulting in potential injury

Existing Controls: • No formal handholds or steps • No warning signage • No defined pedestrian route

Risk Rating (Pre-Control): • Likelihood: Medium • Severity: Medium to High • Overall Risk: Medium / High

Further Control Measures Required: • Regrade or reduce the slope where practicable • Install anti-slip steps or terracing • Provide a handrail or grab rail • Improve surface traction (e.g. bound gravel or non-slip finish) • Install warning signage until permanent measures are in place • Consider an alternative, safer route if regrading is not feasible

Residual Risk (Post-Control): • Likelihood: Low • Severity: Medium • Overall Risk: Low

Action Required: Commission a site inspection by a competent person to determine the most appropriate engineering solution and prioritise remedial works within the maintenance programme.

Review Date: To be reviewed following completion of works or sooner if conditions deteriorate.
