Formal Notice – Highway Defect Causing Flooding, Property Damage and Electrical Safety Risk
I write to formally notify you of a serious highway defect located directly outside my property which now requires urgent attention.
The pothole in question has deteriorated significantly and is now in excess of 40mm deep and extremely large. As a result, it is retaining substantial volumes of standing water. During periods of heavy rainfall, which have been frequent, this water is forced from the carriageway into my driveway.
Consequently, my recently laid cobbles have been repeatedly submerged. More concerningly, the flooding has travelled beneath my boundary fence and reached the electrical supply associated with my automated gates. Since this has occurred, the gates have begun to malfunction and are no longer closing correctly.
This situation presents not only clear and ongoing damage to my property but also a significant electrical safety hazard. Individuals passing through the pooled water — including postal workers, delivery drivers and visitors — may unknowingly be exposed to a risk of electric shock should the affected electrical components become compromised.
Furthermore, the condition of the highway along this section of Saltfleetby appears to be deteriorating more generally. The verge adjacent to my property is progressively eroding due to the condition of the road surface and drainage, and in places has effectively deteriorated into mud. This further demonstrates that the defect is not isolated but part of a wider failure in the road surface and drainage management.
In light of the above, I must request that this defect be inspected and remedied as a matter of urgency. The current circumstances give rise to concerns regarding highway safety, potential property damage, and liability should injury occur.

Part 1 of the remedial work was completed today by an excellent team of workers.
I am now awaiting delivery of aggregate and soil so that I can repair the verge in preparation for spring growth.
I understand that the edging cobbles will be lifted and fitted proud to help prevent further flooding, and I would appreciate confirmation from Highways that this has been logged as a job to be carried out very soon as I am keen to get this sorted before anymore rain.
On another note, I would like to leave positive feedback for Alex and George. As you have my email address, please could you contact me so I can arrange this.

I write to formally notify you that following the heavy rainfall on Sunday, 29th of March 2026, the verge to the front of my property has once again become flooded.
For the avoidance of doubt, the recent remedial works undertaken, namely the filling of the pothole, have not resolved the issue or mitigated the flooding in any meaningful way.
I would be grateful if this matter could be investigated further and appropriate action taken to address the underlying cause.
The continued flooding is not only dangerous but it is affecting my electric gates and my newly cobble frontage.
